How do reading and writing help you improve your speaking?

When you read you are also learning Grammar and vocabulary, whether you are aware of it or not. 
Then, when you write, you are making an effort to use your vocabulary, your Grammar, all your language resources. Even though writing and speaking are not the same, you can write as if you were speaking, so as to practice your English. Try writing something here using this list of vocabulary. Anything! It is a fun exercise and you will be surprised at the results when you do it often: 

Holiday, abroad, sightseeing, train, flight ticket, packing, suitcase, backpack, sunscreen.
