'Spring' idioms and expressions
4 years agoHappy 2020 Everyone! I hope you are well and had a fantastic holiday. To help you get back into studying here are some spring idioms:
1. Spring Cleaning
This is an expression which means to do a thorough clean up of your house or organising your affairs. The expression may have Jewish, Persian or Catholic routes but no-one is really sure.
I have to do a bit of spring cleaning before my mother-in-law arrives!
I have to do some spring cleaning at work my desk is a disaster!
2. Spring Chicken
This is a colloquial expression from the UK. It means someone who is young. It is normally used in a negative construction i.e. "He's no Spring chicken!" (He's really quite old!).
3. Spring in Someone's Step
This means that someone is feeling positive and confident.
She's definitely got a spring in her step since she started her new job.
He's got a spring in his step since his date.
4. Nothing Springs to Mind
This means that you can't think of anything or remember something.
"Can you think of anything to do today?"
"No, nothing springs to mind."
5. Spring Something on Someone
This means to make a sudden demand of someone. It is a way to make it more polite.
"I'm really sorry to spring this on you but can you give me a lift as my car won't start?"
6. Spring is in the Air
This is a comment people make when they see people kissing or being 'lovey' with each other.
"Look at those young lovers! Spring is in the air!
7. Spring into Action
This means to go from being in a state of rest or relaxation into a state of frenetic activity.
The soldiers sprung into action at the sound of gunfire.
The office sprung into action when the trading started.
