UK Slang: British Words for everyday use

6๋…„ ์ „
Here are some slang words to get you started. Have fun learning! ๐Ÿ˜€

Trollied
A โ€œtrollyโ€ is the word the British use for a shopping cart. However, when the noun โ€œtrollyโ€ is turned into the adjective โ€œtrollied,โ€ it is used to describe someone as being drunk.

โ€œI had a few too many cocktails last night, mate. I was trollied.โ€

Fag
In American English, โ€œfagโ€ is a derogatory (insulting or mean) term for someone who is gay. In British slang, however, it just means a cigarette.

โ€œIโ€™m going outside for a fag.โ€

Cuppa
Cuppa comes from the phrase โ€œcup of.โ€ The implied (suggested) meaning is a cup of tea (because we love teaโ€ฆ). The word โ€œteaโ€ is not actually needed. You only need to make it clear if it is a โ€œcuppaโ€ coffee or a โ€œcuppaโ€ something other than tea.

โ€œWould you like a cuppa?โ€
โ€œIโ€™d love one. Iโ€™ll get the kettle on.โ€

Gutted
The original meaning of โ€œgutโ€ is to remove the insides of an animal before eating it (gutting a fish, for example). It also has the meaning of being bitterly disappointed about something.

โ€œI was gutted when I failed the exam.โ€
