I've taught Japanese for beginners, intermediate and advance students alike for 5 years, so if you are just starting out don't worry. My lesson is focused on conversation so that students have a chance to interact through verbal communication and participate in the learning of a new language, as well as, have fun in our class. Hello! My name is Miwa, and my family home is on Sado Island, a small and beautiful island in Japan. My father’s family has been rice farmers there for over 200 years. It’s a peaceful village where people live close to nature, helping each other with rice and vegetable farming. Every year, the community holds a traditional festival at the local shrine to pray for a good harvest—one of the traditions I treasure deeply. Now I live in Auckland, New Zealand, where I experience very different cultures and values. I’m from Yokohama, one of the biggest cities in Japan, located on Tokyo Bay just South of Tokyo, so I speak and teach Tokyo dialect, also known as standard dialect. My major was English language and literature and I did my graduate thesis on intercultural communications. I also took ESL courses with several different professors over the years so I understand how hard it is to study different languages and I know what works.
