3 Tricks For Learning a Language Quickly

These are some easy, short-cut methods of practicing a new language, and to trick your brain into speaking fluently with little effort.

1. Learn a catchy song, even one that is too catchy.

Learn how to sing it before you learn what it means. This can help you get past two big obstacles in learning a new language: learning to pronounce difficult sounds, and getting over your fear of speaking the language out loud.

Here are some easy, popular English songs to learn:

Get Lucky, by Daft Punk
Can't Feel My Face, by The Weekend
Shake it Off, by Taylor Swift

Another fun way to use the songs you learn is by finding ways to incorporate the lyrics into your conversations, like this: "I've seen this movie ten times, but I love it!"

2. Play games

Start out with repetitive games, such as:

I Spy With My Little Eye

“I spy with my little eye, something that starts with the letter B,” or “something green” and the other players need to guess what it is.

I Went to Market

The first person starts, “I went to market and bought a _.” Say it’s a magazine.
The next person lists what has been said before, then adds something. “I went to market and bought a magazine and a pocketknife.” and so on, until someone makes a mistake and is eliminated. The game ends when there is only one player left.

As you become more comfortable speaking, you can try playing games that call for a wider vocabulary and more creativity, like “Two Truths and a Lie”, or “Fortunately/Unfortunately”.

3. Identify phrases or lines that you use every day in your own language

For example:
Do you know what?
What do you mean?
I beg your pardon?
What do you think?
Can I help you?
Really?
Yes, please!
No, thank you.
I would like that.
Please join us/me.
That's great!
That sounds good.
I don't know.
Just a minute.

Learn these in your target language, and use them whenever possible. This will help you stick to the language and not revert to your native tongue when you are not sure what to say next.
