Is Your Language Learning Hitting a Plateau?

This is a rather too familiar situation with beginners in foreign language learning. You have been burning the midnight oil to get yourself ready to prove that you have been successful in learning a new language. Now it is showtime! You suddenly find yourself smack dab in the middle of a conversation with fluent speakers of that same language and you are now sporting a sanguine disposition. 'I can do this,' you ruminate. You just need to apply what you learned and everyone will be impressed! However, when you open your mouth the appropriate vocabulary, tense, or sentence structure seem to have escaped your mind. There are awkward pauses and 'ums' and 'ahs' and finally you utter a few words with a sigh of relief. Unfortunately, the people you were speaking to did not even understand you. So you become circumspect and quickly revert back to your strongest language. A few seconds later you think to yourself, 'If only they would have stopped using slang, then I would have been able to understand them and they would have understood me too!'

Has this or something similar ever happened to you? If this happened to you, don't be discouraged. This is a sign that you are beginning to acquire the language, and all you need is practice. Just like with riding a bike, you need practice in order to be riding the bike instead of pushing the bike.

Remember, you are welcome to sign up for an English class with me. I can help you with your practice, and not only with practice but correct practice. I can help you with the right amount of grammar, and conversation practice that you need to propel you past your plateau!

Hello! My name is Charles. I am a TESOL certified ESL teacher. I reside in the United States, and I have been teaching students of different English abilities for many years. I earned both a bachelor's degree and a master's degree, and I teach English to students from different parts of the world. I have worked in the corporate setting and held educational seminars, and therefore I can also help you with Business English. I like to teach using the communicative approach. I like to make language learning easy too. I will always provide feedback so that you will know what to practice and how to practice. I also tailor my lessons to fit my student's urgent needs. This way you can achieve our educational goals. When I am not teaching, you can find me reading, playing basketball, or spending time with friends and family. Everyone can learn a new language. You can do it! See you in my class!
