'밥 잘 사주는 예쁜 누나 (Pretty noona who buys me food)' is a newly released drama this year and gathered lots of fans in Korea.

Let's learn expressions from K drama script :)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1pEaOBaOiZ0 (You can watch a short video clip)

1.
어떻게, 맘에 드는 여자 찾았어?
Have you found a girl that you like?

불행히도 아직까지는 윤진아가 제일 낫네.
Unfortunately, Jinah Yoon is still the best.

2.
누나, 밥 사줘.
Noona, buy me lunch.

야 왜 냈어? 동생 뺏겨 먹었다고 경선이한테 혼나겠다.
Why did you pay? Gyeonseon is going to scold me.

앞으로 내 점심값 책임지면 돼지.
My lunch is your responsibility from now on.

알았어. 암튼 덕분에 분위기도 밥도 잘 먹었어.
Got it. Anyways I liked the meal and atmosphere there, thanks.

맛을 봤으니 이제 윤진아 큰일났다.
Now that you've tasted it and you are in trouble.

3.
이리와… 비맞지 말라더니
Come on over... You said don't be in the rain.

나도 좀 맞았으니까
Well I got rained on too.

너 근데 왜 우산 하나만 사왔어?
Why did you buy only one umbrella?

그것도 빨간색으로
Moreover it's red.

이렇게 가다간 둘이 다 반은 다 젖겠다.
We are going to be soaking wet if we keep walking like this.

그렇다면 방법이 있지.
Well, then I have a solution.

응?
Huh?

4.
야 남자들은 이쁘면 그냥 마냥 좋냐?
Hey, guys like pretty girls for no reason?

좋지…
Of course...

재수없어.
That sucks.

누나가 더 이뻐.
You are prettier than others.

Today we are going to cover #1,

어떻게, 맘에 드는 여자 찾았어?
Have you found a girl that you like?

불행히도 아직까지는 윤진아가 제일 낫네.
Unfortunately, Jinah Yoon is still the best.

1. Expression: 맘에 들다 = 마음에 들다.
'마음에 들다' means literally something came to your heart(마음) which means 'You like ~'

- Examples:
1) 이 귀걸이 마음에 들어요. I like this earrings.
2) 너 마음에 들어. I like you.
3) 이 색깔이 마음에 들어요. I don't like this color.

2. ~가 제일 낫다. (conjugation form : 나아요[present tense]/나았어요[past tense])
'낫다' means to be better and '제일' is the most, so when they are used together now it sounds like 'the most best = the best'

- Examples:
1) 이게 낫다. This is better.
2) 이 제품이 제일 낫다. This product is the best.
3) 걔 보다는 너가 낫다. You're better than the other.

When '낫다' is used on it's own, it sounds more like comparative.

Did you like my contents? We are going to cover the rest of the script next time.

Stay tuned!

See you next time :)

I graduated for Dongduk Women's university with a BA in English. During my university years, I started to teach English to Korean students throughout my studies for several years. Last year I arrived in Seattle, WA and began to teach Korean to English speakers. K-Pop, Korean shows and various K-Dramas seem to spark the initial interest of my students. Using these fun topics to introduce Korean helps create a fun activity for learning versus a typical study session. Being both a student and teacher of multiple languages I now know very effective ways to learn Korean.
