I’m a TEFL qualified language teacher and I’ve been teaching English in foreign language schools since 2017. I’m British, though I mostly grew up in Southern Ireland and I currently live in Germany. I’m very used to being a language learner myself as before moving to Germany I lived in the Netherlands and Belgium, so I realise some of the challenges of improving language skills. Before teaching English, I worked for zoos and wildlife parks as a presenter and educator which means I’ve been involved in communication and teaching for over 15 years. I qualified to teach English after moving to Germany and I've had students from different countries, backgrounds and of different ages.
If you book a trial lesson with me, my first step is to ask you your goals. Clear goals help to focus the language sessions and keep your motivation high. It also avoids wasting your time learning English which you’ll never use. You may for example, need English to pass an exam, for work, for holidays or simply to read books in their original language or have a conversation. Once I know your main goal, we will discuss how much time you have to achieve it and how much time you can spend doing homework outside the classes. I will then create smaller goals for each of our sessions. If you don’t have a specific goal, then I will assess where you need to improve and make recommendations about what we could focus on.
I focus heavily on speaking skills during the session as this is where most students struggle and lack confidence and written work based on what has been learned in the session is given as homework. I'm flexible in terms of teaching methods because everyone is different and has a preferred way of learning - so if you like grammar charts, I will use those and if you don't I will teach you grammar through just using the spoken language.
I will also constantly assess your English during our sessions and provide feedback on areas you need to work on. If you need to mostly communicate with native English speakers, I will also include cultural differences in the lessons as it’s so important to know these to prevent misunderstandings.
Lastly, if during our trial lesson I don’t think I have the expertise to help you with your specific goals, I will tell you this immediately.
If you have any questions feel free to contact me, otherwise I look forward to meeting you in class.
