5 Common Mistakes in Russian

ūüéßThis is the YouTube version of my article:ūüôāūüéß

1. –Ě–Ķ. / n'e / or / n'i /?

Mistake:

–Ĺ–Ķ —á–ł—ā–įŐĀ—é
–Ĺ–Ķ –Ľ—é–Ī–Ľ—éŐĀ
–Ĺ–Ķ –ĺ–Ĺ
–Ĺ–Ķ –ĺ–Ĺ–įŐĀ

I often hear students read "–Ĺ–Ķ" separately from the word and pronounce it as "nje" or "n'e". It's a mistake.

Explanation:

The particle "–Ĺ–Ķ" is always unstressed and is always read together with the following word making one phonetic word.

Correct usage:

–Ĺ–Ķ —á–ł—ā–įŐĀ—é / n'ichitAju /
–Ĺ–Ķ –Ľ—é–Ī–Ľ—éŐĀ / n'il'ubl'U /
–Ĺ–Ķ –ĺ–Ĺ / n'iOn /
–Ĺ–Ķ –ĺ–Ĺ–įŐĀ / n'ianA /

Exceptions:

\
–Ĺ–ĶŐĀ –Ī—č–Ľ / n'Eb…®l /
–Ĺ–Ķ –Ī—č–Ľ–įŐĀ / nib…®lA /*
–Ĺ–ĶŐĀ –Ī—č–Ľ–ĺ / n'Eb…®la /

–Ĺ–ĶŐĀ –Ī—č–Ľ–ł / n'Eb…®li /

*–Ĺ–Ķ –Ī—č–Ľ–įŐĀ " is not an exception, it follows the general rule.

2. Unstressed "–ĺ".

Mistake:

–ľ–ĺ–Ľ–ĺ–ļ–ĺŐĀ / molokO /
–Ņ–ĺ–ī —Ā—ā–ĺ–Ľ–ĺŐĀ–ľ / potstolOm /
–ī–ĺ–∂–ī–łŐĀ /dozhd'I /

Explanation:

Vowels can be either stressed or unstressed. The unstressed vowels undergo the reduction effects. One of the most important quality reduction effects is called "–źŐĀ–ļ–į–Ĺ—Ć–Ķ": Unstressed letter "–ĺ" should be read as / –į /.

Correct usage:

–ľ–ĺ–Ľ–ĺ–ļ–ĺŐĀ / malakO / \
–Ņ–ĺ–ī —Ā—ā–ĺ–Ľ–ĺŐĀ–ľ / patstalOm /*
–ī–ĺ–∂–ī—Ć / dOsht' /

But : \
–ī–ĺ–∂–ī–łŐĀ / dazhd'I /

*The preposition "–Ņ–ĺ–ī" (as the overwhelming majority of prepositions) gets connected to the following word and makes one phonetic word. Consequently (considering the fact that there can be only one stress in a word) "–Ņ–ĺ–ī" is unstressed and we apply "–ź–ļ–į–Ĺ—Ć–Ķ effect". And / –ī / becomes / —ā / because of the following unvoiced "c".

3. –ü–ĺ—ā–ĺ–ľ—ÉŐĀ —á—ā–ĺ.

Mistake:

–ü–ĺ—ā–ĺ–ľ—ÉŐĀ —á—ā–ĺ –ĺ–Ĺ –Ĺ–Ķ –Ņ–ĺ–∑–≤–ĺ–Ĺ–łŐĀ–Ľ –ľ–Ĺ–Ķ, —Ź –∑–į–Ī—čŐĀ–Ľ–į –ļ—É–Ņ–łŐĀ—ā—Ć –ĺŐĀ–≤–ĺ—Č–ł.

Explanation:

The conjunction "–Ņ–ĺ—ā–ĺ–ľ—ÉŐĀ —á—ā–ĺ" cannot begin the sentence.

Correct usage:

–Į –∑–į–Ī—čŐĀ–Ľ–į –ļ—É–Ņ–łŐĀ—ā—Ć –ĺŐĀ–≤–ĺ—Č–ł, –Ņ–ĺ—ā–ĺ–ľ—ÉŐĀ —á—ā–ĺ –ĺ–Ĺ –Ĺ–Ķ –Ņ–ĺ–∑–≤–ĺ–Ĺ–łŐĀ–Ľ –ľ–Ĺ–Ķ.
–Ę–į–ļ –ļ–į–ļ –ĺ–Ĺ –Ĺ–Ķ –Ņ–ĺ–∑–≤–ĺ–Ĺ–łŐĀ–Ľ –ľ–Ĺ–Ķ, —Ź –∑–į–Ī—čŐĀ–Ľ–į –ļ—É–Ņ–łŐĀ—ā—Ć –ĺŐĀ–≤–ĺ—Č–ł.

4. –í—á–Ķ—Ä–įŐĀ, –í—Ā–Ķ, –í—Ā—Ď, –í—Ā–Ķ–≥–ī–įŐĀ, –í—ā–ĺŐĀ—Ä–Ĺ–ł–ļ, etc.

Mistake:

–í—á–Ķ—Ä–įŐĀ / vichirA /
–í—Ā–Ķ / vis'E /
–í—Ā—Ď / vis'O /
–í—Ā–Ķ–≥–ī–įŐĀ / vsigdA /
–í—ā–ĺŐĀ—Ä–Ĺ–ł–ļ / vtOrnik

Explanation:

When we have a cluster of consonants, the following consonant influences the preceding. If the following consonant is unvoiced, it makes the preceding consonant unvoiced too. Consequently we should pronounce the letter "–≤" in the given words as / —Ą /.\
When students don't know this rule, they pronounce this letter as / v / or often with an additional aftersound / vi / which is wrong and confuses the meaning. For example, when you say –≤—á–Ķ—Ä–įŐĀ as / vichirA / it sounds like "–≤–Ķ—á–Ķ—Ä–įŐĀ".

Correct usage:

–í—á–Ķ—Ä–įŐĀ / fchirA /
–í—Ā–Ķ / fs'E /
–í—Ā—Ď / fs'O /
–í—Ā–Ķ–≥–ī–įŐĀ / fsigdA /
–í—ā–ĺŐĀ—Ä–Ĺ–ł–ļ / ftOrnik /

5. "–ü—Ä–ĺ–Ī–Ľ–ĶŐĀ–ľ" –ł–Ľ–ł "–ü—Ä–ĺ–Ī–Ľ–ĶŐĀ–ľ–į"

The English expression "No problem!" should be translated to Russian as "–Ě–Ķ—ā –Ņ—Ä–ĺ–Ī–Ľ–ĶŐĀ–ľ!"

Mistake:

–£ –ľ–Ķ–Ĺ—ŹŐĀ –Ņ—Ä–ĺ–Ī–Ľ–ĶŐĀ–ľ —Ā –ļ–ĺ–ľ–Ņ—Ć—éŐĀ—ā–Ķ—Ä–ĺ–ľ.

Explanation:

The reason why students are often confused about this word is very simple. In the English expression "no problem", the word "problem" is in singular form, but in Russian - "–Ĺ–Ķ—ā –Ņ—Ä–ĺ–Ī–Ľ–Ķ–ľ", it is the Genitive Case Plural form of the word "–Ņ—Ä–ĺ–Ī–Ľ–Ķ–ľ–į", which is feminine.

Correct usage:

–£ –ľ–Ķ–Ĺ—ŹŐĀ –Ņ—Ä–ĺ–Ī–Ľ–ĶŐĀ–ľ–į —Ā –ļ–ĺ–ľ–Ņ—Ć—éŐĀ—ā–Ķ—Ä–ĺ–ľ.

–£ –Ĺ–į—Ā –Ī—č–Ľ–įŐĀ –Ņ—Ä–ĺ–Ī–Ľ–ĶŐĀ–ľ–į —Ā –ļ–ĺ–ľ–Ņ—Ć—éŐĀ—ā–Ķ—Ä–ĺ–ľ.

–£ –Ĺ–Ķ—Ď –Ī—čŐĀ–Ľ–ł –Ņ—Ä–ĺ–Ī–Ľ–ĶŐĀ–ľ—č —Ā –ļ–ĺ–ľ–Ņ—Ć—éŐĀ—ā–Ķ—Ä–ĺ–ľ.
–ě–Ĺ–į —Ä–Ķ—ą–įŐĀ–Ľ–į —Ā–≤–ĺ–łŐĀ –Ņ—Ä–ĺ–Ī–Ľ–ĶŐĀ–ľ—č —Ā –ļ–ĺ–ľ–Ņ—Ć—éŐĀ—ā–Ķ—Ä–ĺ–ľ, –į —Ź —Ä–Ķ—ą–łŐĀ–Ľ, —á—ā–ĺ –Ľ—ÉŐĀ—á—ą–Ķ –Ņ–ĺ–Ļ—ā–łŐĀ –Ņ–ĺ–≥—É–Ľ—ŹŐĀ—ā—Ć.

-–Ē–ĺŐĀ–ļ—ā–ĺ—Ä, —É –ľ–Ķ–Ĺ—ŹŐĀ —ā–Ķ–ľ–Ņ–Ķ—Ä–į—ā—ÉŐĀ—Ä–į! –ß—ā–ĺ –ľ–Ĺ–Ķ –ī–ĶŐĀ–Ľ–į—ā—Ć?
-–í—č —á–ł—ā–įŐĀ–Ľ–ł –ī—Ä–ĶŐĀ–≤–Ĺ–ł—Ö —Ą–ł–Ľ–ĺŐĀ—Ā–ĺ—Ą–ĺ–≤? –ü—Ä–ł—á–łŐĀ–Ĺ—č –Ņ—Ä–ĺ–Ī–Ľ–ĶŐĀ–ľ –Ĺ—ÉŐĀ–∂–Ĺ–ĺ –ł—Ā–ļ–įŐĀ—ā—Ć –≤ —Ā–Ķ–Ī–ĶŐĀ!

-–ú–į—ą–łŐĀ–Ĺ–į –Ĺ–Ķ –ĶŐĀ–ī–Ķ—ā.
-–í —á—Ď–ľ –Ņ—Ä–ĺ–Ī–Ľ–ĶŐĀ–ľ–į?
-–Ē–≤–łŐĀ–≥–į—ā–Ķ–Ľ—Ć –≤ –Ņ–ĺ—Ä—ŹŐĀ–ī–ļ–Ķ... –Ę–ĺ–≥–ī–įŐĀ, –Ĺ–į–≤–ĶŐĀ—Ä–Ĺ–ĺ–Ķ, –Ņ—Ä–ĺ–Ī–Ľ–ĶŐĀ–ľ–į –≤ –į–ļ–ļ—É–ľ—É–Ľ—ŹŐĀ—ā–ĺ—Ä–Ķ.

–Į —Ö–ĺ—á—ÉŐĀ –ļ—É–Ņ–łŐĀ—ā—Ć —Ä—čŐĀ–Ī—É. –Ě–ĺ –Ņ—Ä–ĺ–Ī–Ľ–ĶŐĀ–ľ–į –≤ —ā–ĺ–ľ, —á—ā–ĺ –ľ–ĺ—ŹŐĀ –∂–Ķ–Ĺ–įŐĀ –∑–į–Ī—čŐĀ–Ľ–į –ļ–ĺ—ą–Ķ–Ľ—Ď–ļ –ī–ĺŐĀ–ľ–į, –į —É –ľ–Ķ–Ĺ—ŹŐĀ –ļ–ĺ—ą–Ķ–Ľ—Ć–ļ–įŐĀ –Ĺ–Ķ—ā.

-–Į —Ö–ĺ—á—ÉŐĀ –Ņ—Ä–ł–ĶŐĀ—Ö–į—ā—Ć –Ĺ–į –ļ–ĺ–Ĺ—Ą–Ķ—Ä–ĶŐĀ–Ĺ—Ü–ł—é.
-–Ę–ĺ–≥–ī–įŐĀ –≤ —á—Ď–ľ –Ņ—Ä–ĺ–Ī–Ľ–ĶŐĀ–ľ–į?

-–ú—É–∂—á–łŐĀ–Ĺ–į, –í—č —É–∂–Ķ –≤ –†–ł–ľ–Ķ!
-–ě–Ļ! –Ę–ĺ–≥–ī–įŐĀ —É –ľ–Ķ–Ĺ—ŹŐĀ —Ā–Ķ—Ä—Ć—Ď–∑–Ĺ—č–Ķ –Ņ—Ä–ĺ–Ī–Ľ–ĶŐĀ–ľ—č —Ā –Ņ–įŐĀ–ľ—Ź—ā—Ć—é!
