The best Polish holiday is coming!

5 yıl önce
This week I have another news for you from the Polski Daily website!

Fat Thursday is – in the Christian calendar - the last Thursday before Lent (so 52 days before Easter), and so it opens the very last week of the carnival. According to the tradition, on that day it is allowed to binge-eat. The most popular sweets eaten on that day are donuts and angel wings, in some regions of Poland called "brushwood". Back in the days people would eat donuts filled with lard, bacon and meat, which have been accompanied by a lot of vodka shots.

The origins of the Fat Thursday is pagan. It was a day when the end of winter and the beginning of spring was celebrated. The festivities were based on eating greasy and fat dishes, especially meat and on drinking wine, and the most popular snacks were donuts, that used to be made out of the bread like dough and stuffed with lard (pig fat). Already the Romans celebrated this kind of holiday and they’d call it „the fat day”.

Around the 16th century a new tradition – to eat sweet donuts – occurred in Poland for the very first time. They looked a bit different to today’s donuts – they had a hidden nut or almond inside. The person who found the lucky donut with the nut / almond inside was supposed to be very lucky and wealthy all coming year!

Cheers!
