Hi! My name is Rachel and I´ve been teaching more than ten years to kids and adults. I'm originally from the United States and speak English natively. I´ve lived in Chile since 2015, currently in La Serena where I teach many subjects, including English as a second language in both private and group classes.
I view language learning as incredibly important because all other subjects and themes can be investigated through the teaching of language and, most importantly, because stereotypes and borders can be broken down by getting to know one another. Language is a great aid in that quest.
To present new language concepts, I use clear modeling, visual props, physical cues (TPR) to help the students integrate the concepts not only into their mind, but into their physical memory as well. I also incorporate drama and voice techniques to help the student pronounce difficult sounds. I find it very important to connect the student's life and personal goals to the class theme and style so that the content has real-world meaning for him/her and it becomes easier for s/he to practice out of the classroom. I provide students with the tools they need in order to grow and then encourage their independence. I give the student the space and security to speak and err and speak again. For me, listening to each individual with a supportive and constructive ear is essential so that I can provide appropriate feedback and challenges for the student, along with the support necessary to reach those challenges. This way of teaching often leads to the student surprising themselves with their capacities and therefore greater confidence in self-expression and communication.
My personal experience learning Spanish has allowed me to live in another country and humbly learn another culture and perspective, work in a 1-of-a-kind school and help bring people together through communication. I want to help others realize the gifts the universe has in store for them by helping them communicate on a deeper level with others.
