Hello, Verbling Community. My name is David Yenches and I am a native North American but also familiar with British English, so I can give you both versions if you want them. I am a US citizen with over 40 years of experience as an English language teacher, tester, and business school manager. The countries I have lived and worked in include the UK, Iran, Singapore, Thailand, and Japan. I also have over 2 years of experience as an online tutor, teaching students from Turkey, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Poland, and South Korea. I have learned a lot about the culture and current events in those countries from my students, and of course I learned a lot about the countries and areas where I lived and worked.
I have a Bachelor's degree in English Literature from Dartmouth College in the USA (1971–1975). I also took a month-long small-group intensive course for my RSA training in London from International House in 1976.
My teaching style is attentive and patient, and I prefer to have students do as much talking as possible. When they have finished, I offer any pronunciation or grammatical corrections jotted down in my notebook. I also suggest new or alternative vocabulary where appropriate. I try to motivate students to say what is important to them so that they can develop their speaking skills over time. One reason for keeping a notebook is to review key language points when I see them again for a sense of continuity in building up their communication skills.
