Teaching at university in Vietnam I have seen so many students fail their IELTS test or stumble in English because they have not enjoyed the practice enough to improve properly. Besides IELTS, I also enjoy teaching general informal communication English that has a more practical day to day use for the student. For example I enjoy getting my students to understand the correct use of certain slang words and innuendos, so that when you speak to a native English speaker at home or on your travels, you can talk like a natural. They say you are only fluent in a language when you understand the slang!
I am a qualified English teacher with three years of experience in all levels and ages, mostly in IELTS, conversation and communication. I graduated in a BSc (Hons) in Geology and Environmental Sciences and worked as geologist looking for gold all over Africa before deciding to go the ESL teaching route and doing my TEFL training. I have lived and studied languages in central America, Vietnam, Canada, USA and parts of Africa.
Lastly, what can I say to all of you hard-working students out there? In my opinion the trick to
learning a new language is to practice and study frequently for a short period at a time, rather
than bore yourself out with lengthy study sessions. Have fun doing it and you will learn a lot
quicker!
