Su di me

I am from the United States but have lived in Cape Town for nearly 5 years. Although I have experience teaching and working in a language laboratory in the US which serviced recent immigrants, the rest of my professional experiences has been outside of my home country. I have been teaching for about 16 years and have gained vast intercultural experiences through travel, professional and volunteer work. I have been to 19 countries and counting. I was a Peace Corps Volunteer in both Madagascar and Mozambique where I taught English in local government middle and high schools. I also received 2 distinguished Fellowships from the US State Department to lecture at universities in Mozambique and Angola in both English language teacher training and English for Tourism development. I speak English, Spanish, Portuguese and Malagasy, which has helped me understand that in-depth understanding of people is essential for intercultural communication in any language. I am dedicated to constant self-development in order to better serve students.

My teaching utilizes communicative language teaching methods where not only the necessary words and grammar are taken into account but also how to go about actually using the language in practical ways. I am a very patient teacher who takes the time to answer many questions so students can gain a deep understanding. I know about how difficult learning a language can be if you use certain methods, but also how fun it can be if you use the right ones.

My main goal with my lessons is to help everyone involved, including myself, learn something about the people involved in the lesson so we create more positive connections and understanding of each other.
