How to turn daily activities into language learning activities
What is the best way to learn a language fluently?
The best way would be to submerge yourself in the language and culture, but seeing as most of us lead lives with responsibilities and commitments, that is not really possible.
I have a simple solution for you.
Let's say that you are trying to learn English.
To become fluent in English means to be able to read, write, listen and speak fluently. We live most of our lives through at least one of these activities, so best to do it in English as much as possible.
- Wake up in the morning and turn on some music to listen to? Listen to English music.
- Need to look up a recipe to cook or bake some great food? Find a recipe in English.
- Watching your favourite series or movie on TV? See if you can add subtitles in English or better yet, watch the show in English with subtitles in your native language.
- Do you love reading? Find an English book that is on your reading level and that you will enjoy and read it instead of a book in your native language. If you come across a word that you do not yet know, keep a dictionary nearby for an explanation. If you find a sentence or phrase that does not make sense to you, write it down and ask your teacher next time you have a lesson.
There are many creative ways to include English into your daily life so that learning the language becomes simpler and like second nature. You will become fluent in a shorter period of time and your knowledge of the language will be more well rounded.
This is a method I use while teaching all my students and my great success rate over the years has proven how well this method works.
Learning a language is done best when it is not only experienced within the space of your lessons and homework but as much as possible throughout your daily life.
