ㅅ vs. ㅆ pronunciation in Korean

< ㅅ vs. ㅆ pronunciation in Korean >.

There are two different Korean s's as well.

a plain ㅅ and a tense ㅆ. .

In this case, though, the tense ㅆ sounds a little more like the English s than the plain one. The tense ㅆ in Korean is a just a bit more tensed, with a harsher hissing sound that is normal in English, and it has the familiar raised pitch of tense consonants. Try saying 싸 with a good tense ㅆ.

To pronounce a nice 'plain' or soft ㅅ, you might imagine there is an h sound before the ㅅ. Try to saying 사랑 in a breathy, romantic way, and your ㅅ will probably be about right.

사 싸 / 소 쏘 / 설 썰

삼 쌈 / 살 쌀 / 생 쌩

산 싼 / 수 쑤 / 서 써

< Double consonant (ㅆsound) practice >.

싸요 to be cheap - 귤이 싸요. the tangerine is cheap

써요 to write/ to use - 나는 일기를 써요. I write in my diary

싸워요. to fight - 왜 싸워요? why are you fighting?

글씨 a character/ a letter/a handwriting - 권지용의 글씨가 예뻐요. GD's handwriting is pretty

비싸요 to be expensive - 한국은 우유가 비싸요. A milk is expensive in Korea

Hi everyone. I am Helena Seo. I was an English tutor in Korea for three years and most of my students were middle and high schoolers. I then began my adventure to Australia as a Korean tutor. Initially, I have a few students and they were people who are full with passion in learning the Korean language and culture. Also, there are some students who would like to become a translator or interpreter in the future. Well, I am very happy with them and I had a great time with them as we get to increase our expertise on different cultures as well as getting to know about each other more! I am a friendly, responsible and patience tutor and I will try my best to keep your interest in studying Korean. It doesn’t matter if you are a total beginner or advance, you don’t need to worry as I will help you in improving your writing, reading, pronouncing, and vocabulary skills. As for the advance student, if you are more interested in elevating you’re listening and speaking skills, I can choose som...
