Hello! My name is Miwa, and my family home is on Sado Island, a small and beautiful island in Japan. My father’s family has been rice farmers there for over 200 years. It’s a peaceful village where people live close to nature, helping each other with rice and vegetable farming. Every year, the community holds a traditional festival at the local shrine to pray for a good harvest—one of the traditions I treasure deeply. Now I live in Auckland, New Zealand, where I experience very different cultures and values. I was born in Japan and studied in Canada and USA. When I was studying music in LA, I learned Brazilian music and a couple of years later I went to Brazil and met my husband. I didn't know how to speak Portuguese at that time, I only knew how to sing in Portuguese, but from the very first day of Brazil I learned how to have fun and communicate with people without knowing much of the theory and vocabulary. It was just like how people learn jazz. There's a theory behind, but the most importantly we should feel and improvise. And to understand the theory, you first should listen, listen and listen.
