I am a qualified an EFL/ESL, ESOL, and Bahasa Indonesia teacher in London, UK. I have been tutoring (teaching as well as lecturing) since 2001, and have had the opportunity to teach in the U.K., Indonesia, Spain, and the U.S.
I graduated with a B.A. in Professional Communication from RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia, and with an MA in Education Policy from the Institute of Education (UCL) in London. My dissertation, which is currently under peer review for publication, centred on the benefits and challenges of online learning on a massive scale.
I did not start off as an English teacher. In fact, I studied and worked in Journalism in Australia, for six years. I worked for two years as a Reporter for EWN Publishing, a family-owned newsletter publisher in Sydney. Upon returning to my home country, Indonesia, I worked as a journalist for English publications such as The Jakarta Post, Bali Advertiser, and contributed for Kompas, Komputer Aktif, and Majalah Tempo.
I started off as an English tutor in Indonesia, in 2001, moving on to teaching English in an International school, and from 2007-2012 I was a lecturer for English for Tourism, Business Communication, and Academic Writing modules in a private university. I have been tutoring Business English, study preparation (TOEFL and IELTS), and General English.
In 2012 I was awarded the Erasmus Mundus (now Erasmus+) scholarship, went to the EU, and studied for my MA in Lifelong Learning, in Denmark, Spain, and the U.K. While studying in Spain, I also taught FCE English and Conversational English.
In 2015 I moved to London, started teaching Bahasa Indonesia at SOAS Language Centre. In 2019 I took a CELTA certification and have been teaching ESOL until present time.
My teaching style is very much learner-centred, making sure that I understand learners' motivations and passions. As much as I can, I try to incorporate those in my lesson plans. Each session is noted, reviewed and analysed, and in the end I email the notes to my learners so that they can learn from their errors. I am very approachable and tolerant. I make sure topics are understood and not mechanised. I personally think lessons should be engaging enough as to motivate learners to want to know more and learn more.
