About Me

I'm a Cambridge certified ESL teacher and Linguistics graduate from the University of Manchester. I'm originally from the northeast of England, but at the moment I'm teaching in São Paulo, Brazil and online.
I started teaching English in 2015 in a language school in Costa Rica. I spent 3 years there, teaching General English to groups of learners of all levels (A1-C2) before moving to Brazil in 2018. Since moving here, I've gained a lot of experience teaching Business English in both 1-to-1 and group classes.

Teaching English as a second language is a day to day joy and I want my students to enjoy the experience as much as I do. In my classes I try to create a fun, dynamic and friendly environment where you will feel comfortable and confident practicing the language and developing new skills!

If you have any questions, feel free to write to me, but below are some questions I get asked a lot:

Frequently Asked Questions:
What is your methodology?
In our trial class, we will talk about your needs and goals with English. Every learner is different, so I try to use a methodology that will suit you. I'm trained in lots of different methodologies, both traditional and modern, so I try to borrow from all of them. In general lessons will consist of fun, dynamic "learner centred" tasks where you will gain skills to discover vocabulary, patterns and techniques .

How many classes will I need to speak English well?
There is no correct answer to this question, and any language teaching company that makes these promises is being extremely dishonest. In my opinion, the more time you dedicate to independent study, the faster you will learn. In my classes, you will develop the skills to make you more confident with independent learning.

What is more important: grammar, reading, writing, listening, or speaking?
This depends on your needs; for example, if your immediate need in English is to write emails, lessons will focus on writing emails. If you need English to read business reports, your lessons will focus on gaining the skills to do that. If you're studying for general improvement, I'll make sure that your course contains a little bit of everything.

Do you use a textbook?
I prefer to use authentic materials, which are materials I have found in the real-world (e.g. on websites, in newspapers, on TV, etc.). However, I will sometimes borrow from textbooks if the material is appropriate for your needs.

Do you teach kids? Do you work on weekends?
Unfortunately, I don't do either of these. I'm only trained to teach teenagers and adults, so I feel it would be irresponsible of me to accept bookings from kids.
In general, I try to keep a Monday-Friday schedule, but if you need a class urgently (you're preparing for an interview, a presentation, etc.) send me a message and I'll do my best to help you!

How is learning online different to learning in person?
The first time you study online it can be a little strange, but it becomes normal very quickly. In my opinion, there isn't actually that much difference. Verbling is a good platform where I can share a lot of materials with you, just make sure you use Google Chrome on a computer/laptop to get its full capabilities :)
