5 Common Mistakes in Russian

čÄžThis is the YouTube version of my article:čÖéčÄž

1. đŁđÁ. / n'e / or / n'i /?

Mistake:

đŻđÁ ĐçđŞĐéđ░╠üĐÄ
đŻđÁ đ╗ĐÄđ▒đ╗ĐÄ╠ü
đŻđÁ đżđŻ
đŻđÁ đżđŻđ░╠ü

I often hear students read "đŻđÁ" separately from the word and pronounce it as "nje" or "n'e". It's a mistake.

Explanation:

The particle "đŻđÁ" is always unstressed and is always read together with the following word making one phonetic word.

Correct usage:

đŻđÁ ĐçđŞĐéđ░╠üĐÄ / n'ichitAju /
đŻđÁ đ╗ĐÄđ▒đ╗ĐÄ╠ü / n'il'ubl'U /
đŻđÁ đżđŻ / n'iOn /
đŻđÁ đżđŻđ░╠ü / n'ianA /

Exceptions:

\
đŻđÁ╠ü đ▒Đőđ╗ / n'Eb╔Ęl /
đŻđÁ đ▒Đőđ╗đ░╠ü / nib╔ĘlA /*
đŻđÁ╠ü đ▒Đőđ╗đż / n'Eb╔Ęla /

đŻđÁ╠ü đ▒Đőđ╗đŞ / n'Eb╔Ęli /

*đŻđÁ đ▒Đőđ╗đ░╠ü " is not an exception, it follows the general rule.

2. Unstressed "đż".

Mistake:

đ╝đżđ╗đżđ║đż╠ü / molokO /
đ┐đżđ┤ ĐüĐéđżđ╗đż╠üđ╝ / potstolOm /
đ┤đżđÂđ┤đŞ╠ü /dozhd'I /

Explanation:

Vowels can be either stressed or unstressed. The unstressed vowels undergo the reduction effects. One of the most important quality reduction effects is called "đÉ╠üđ║đ░đŻĐîđÁ": Unstressed letter "đż" should be read as / đ░ /.

Correct usage:

đ╝đżđ╗đżđ║đż╠ü / malakO / \
đ┐đżđ┤ ĐüĐéđżđ╗đż╠üđ╝ / patstalOm /*
đ┤đżđÂđ┤Đî / dOsht' /

But : \
đ┤đżđÂđ┤đŞ╠ü / dazhd'I /

*The preposition "đ┐đżđ┤" (as the overwhelming majority of prepositions) gets connected to the following word and makes one phonetic word. Consequently (considering the fact that there can be only one stress in a word) "đ┐đżđ┤" is unstressed and we apply "đÉđ║đ░đŻĐîđÁ effect". And / đ┤ / becomes / Đé / because of the following unvoiced "c".

3. đčđżĐéđżđ╝Đâ╠ü ĐçĐéđż.

Mistake:

đčđżĐéđżđ╝Đâ╠ü ĐçĐéđż đżđŻ đŻđÁ đ┐đżđĚđ▓đżđŻđŞ╠üđ╗ đ╝đŻđÁ, ĐĆ đĚđ░đ▒Đő╠üđ╗đ░ đ║Đâđ┐đŞ╠üĐéĐî đż╠üđ▓đżĐëđŞ.

Explanation:

The conjunction "đ┐đżĐéđżđ╝Đâ╠ü ĐçĐéđż" cannot begin the sentence.

Correct usage:

đ» đĚđ░đ▒Đő╠üđ╗đ░ đ║Đâđ┐đŞ╠üĐéĐî đż╠üđ▓đżĐëđŞ, đ┐đżĐéđżđ╝Đâ╠ü ĐçĐéđż đżđŻ đŻđÁ đ┐đżđĚđ▓đżđŻđŞ╠üđ╗ đ╝đŻđÁ.
đóđ░đ║ đ║đ░đ║ đżđŻ đŻđÁ đ┐đżđĚđ▓đżđŻđŞ╠üđ╗ đ╝đŻđÁ, ĐĆ đĚđ░đ▒Đő╠üđ╗đ░ đ║Đâđ┐đŞ╠üĐéĐî đż╠üđ▓đżĐëđŞ.

4. đĺĐçđÁĐÇđ░╠ü, đĺĐüđÁ, đĺĐüĐĹ, đĺĐüđÁđ│đ┤đ░╠ü, đĺĐéđż╠üĐÇđŻđŞđ║, etc.

Mistake:

đĺĐçđÁĐÇđ░╠ü / vichirA /
đĺĐüđÁ / vis'E /
đĺĐüĐĹ / vis'O /
đĺĐüđÁđ│đ┤đ░╠ü / vsigdA /
đĺĐéđż╠üĐÇđŻđŞđ║ / vtOrnik

Explanation:

When we have a cluster of consonants, the following consonant influences the preceding. If the following consonant is unvoiced, it makes the preceding consonant unvoiced too. Consequently we should pronounce the letter "đ▓" in the given words as / Đä /.\
When students don't know this rule, they pronounce this letter as / v / or often with an additional aftersound / vi / which is wrong and confuses the meaning. For example, when you say đ▓ĐçđÁĐÇđ░╠ü as / vichirA / it sounds like "đ▓đÁĐçđÁĐÇđ░╠ü".

Correct usage:

đĺĐçđÁĐÇđ░╠ü / fchirA /
đĺĐüđÁ / fs'E /
đĺĐüĐĹ / fs'O /
đĺĐüđÁđ│đ┤đ░╠ü / fsigdA /
đĺĐéđż╠üĐÇđŻđŞđ║ / ftOrnik /

5. "đčĐÇđżđ▒đ╗đÁ╠üđ╝" đŞđ╗đŞ "đčĐÇđżđ▒đ╗đÁ╠üđ╝đ░"

The English expression "No problem!" should be translated to Russian as "đŁđÁĐé đ┐ĐÇđżđ▒đ╗đÁ╠üđ╝!"

Mistake:

đú đ╝đÁđŻĐĆ╠ü đ┐ĐÇđżđ▒đ╗đÁ╠üđ╝ Đü đ║đżđ╝đ┐ĐîĐÄ╠üĐéđÁĐÇđżđ╝.

Explanation:

The reason why students are often confused about this word is very simple. In the English expression "no problem", the word "problem" is in singular form, but in Russian - "đŻđÁĐé đ┐ĐÇđżđ▒đ╗đÁđ╝", it is the Genitive Case Plural form of the word "đ┐ĐÇđżđ▒đ╗đÁđ╝đ░", which is feminine.

Correct usage:

đú đ╝đÁđŻĐĆ╠ü đ┐ĐÇđżđ▒đ╗đÁ╠üđ╝đ░ Đü đ║đżđ╝đ┐ĐîĐÄ╠üĐéđÁĐÇđżđ╝.

đú đŻđ░Đü đ▒Đőđ╗đ░╠ü đ┐ĐÇđżđ▒đ╗đÁ╠üđ╝đ░ Đü đ║đżđ╝đ┐ĐîĐÄ╠üĐéđÁĐÇđżđ╝.

đú đŻđÁĐĹ đ▒Đő╠üđ╗đŞ đ┐ĐÇđżđ▒đ╗đÁ╠üđ╝Đő Đü đ║đżđ╝đ┐ĐîĐÄ╠üĐéđÁĐÇđżđ╝.
đ×đŻđ░ ĐÇđÁĐłđ░╠üđ╗đ░ Đüđ▓đżđŞ╠ü đ┐ĐÇđżđ▒đ╗đÁ╠üđ╝Đő Đü đ║đżđ╝đ┐ĐîĐÄ╠üĐéđÁĐÇđżđ╝, đ░ ĐĆ ĐÇđÁĐłđŞ╠üđ╗, ĐçĐéđż đ╗Đâ╠üĐçĐłđÁ đ┐đżđ╣ĐéđŞ╠ü đ┐đżđ│Đâđ╗ĐĆ╠üĐéĐî.

-đöđż╠üđ║ĐéđżĐÇ, Đâ đ╝đÁđŻĐĆ╠ü ĐéđÁđ╝đ┐đÁĐÇđ░ĐéĐâ╠üĐÇđ░! đžĐéđż đ╝đŻđÁ đ┤đÁ╠üđ╗đ░ĐéĐî?
-đĺĐő ĐçđŞĐéđ░╠üđ╗đŞ đ┤ĐÇđÁ╠üđ▓đŻđŞĐů ĐäđŞđ╗đż╠üĐüđżĐäđżđ▓? đčĐÇđŞĐçđŞ╠üđŻĐő đ┐ĐÇđżđ▒đ╗đÁ╠üđ╝ đŻĐâ╠üđÂđŻđż đŞĐüđ║đ░╠üĐéĐî đ▓ ĐüđÁđ▒đÁ╠ü!

-đťđ░ĐłđŞ╠üđŻđ░ đŻđÁ đÁ╠üđ┤đÁĐé.
-đĺ ĐçĐĹđ╝ đ┐ĐÇđżđ▒đ╗đÁ╠üđ╝đ░?

-đ» ĐůđżĐçĐâ╠ü đ┐ĐÇđŞđÁ╠üĐůđ░ĐéĐî đŻđ░ đ║đżđŻĐäđÁĐÇđÁ╠üđŻĐćđŞĐÄ.
