Did you get anything for Women’s Day?

5 yıl önce
This week I have another news for you from the Polski Daily website!

The beginnings of the international Women’s Day come from the labor movements in North America and Europe. On the 8th of March 1908 on the streets of New York there was a march of 15 thousand women - employees of the clothing factories (commemorating a similar march from 1857), demanding their political and economic rights. The first celebration of the International Women’s Day were held in the US, on February 28th 1909. They were established by the American Socialist Party.

In Poland, the holiday was especially popular during the communist times. Back then people would say that „there is no area in today’s Poland where women don’t play an important role”. In the workhouses or schools the holiday was obligatory! Women would get totally crazy gifts like: tights, a towel, a kitchen cloth or a tea-towel, a soap or a pack of coffee – that’s because during the communist times those were the scarce products, so there were in the shops rarely and in small quantities. Also, they were quite expensive! In the 70s, to the list of most popular gifts flowers were added.

Nowadays, every year there are feminist manifests organised on March 8th, so demonstrations combined with happenings for the equal treatment of women and men. And the gifts today are mostly flowers or sweets!

Cheers!
