How do you remember the words you learn?

Vocabulary is so important to be proficent in an language and there are a lot of strategies to learn new vocabulary, but I think the most diffcult part is to remember those word along the time. What have been useful for you to keep those words in your mind for a long time when you don't have the oportunity to use them in a conversation at that very moment? Tell me!!
