My name is Jody. Originally from South Africa, I've been living and teaching English in Brazil since 2010.
I generally prefer the communicative approach to teaching, which is to say, using repetition and equivalence more than teaching grammar rules/structures. I have taught teenagers and adults in a variety of English Course Schools, as well as had many private students over the years.
The most important thing I have discovered in my years of teaching is that language learners do best when they are enjoying themselves while they learn, without feeling pressured. So for best results, I try to make my classes fun, and let my students set their own pace.
Besides every-day English, I've had experience teaching "business English", and have also helped guide people in preparation for taking the TOEIC test.
I am extremely versatile and will work with you to discover your relative strengths and weaknesses in order to help you in areas that most need improvement.
Don't hesitate! - book a class with me as soon as possible and get started!
My favourite of all the places I've worked. They combine the lexical approach with the communicative approach, and study with language "chunks" (collocations) as opposed to single-word vocabulary lists, and including any type of 'fun' in the classes is encouraged. Very effective.
2014 - 2015
Teaching in South Africa
"Let's Learn English" English Course - Cape Town, South Africa
My first experience teaching non-Brazilians, which in some cases forced me to be creative in order to break the language barrier. However, I mostly taught advanced students so this was not usually a problem.
2012 - 2014
Teaching in Brazil 3
"Manhattan" English Course - Salvador, Brazil
Here the structural approach was combined with the communicative approach. I saw how much more effective classes were and how much happier the students, when using the communicative approach, and was forever sold on it.
2012 - 2012
Teaching in Brazil 2
"Achieve Languages" English Course - Salvador, Brazil
A new school with an entirely different approach which had potential, but unfortunately the school did not stay open for very long.
2010 - 2012
Teaching in Brazil 1
"Skill Idiomas" English Course - Salvador, Brazil
My first opportunity to teach English - an eye-opening experience.
