The whole story:
Hello everybody! My name is Chris and I am an English teacher from the UK who is currently living and working in Asia.
My journey into teaching started when I was completing my undergraduate degree at the University of Essex. During the exam term of my first year I started creating and hosting private study groups for my peers in empty classrooms. This soon resulted in me adopting a causal teaching role, and my efforts were soon noticed by the university, who offered me further opportunities to teach and lecture for the purposes of study support and revision. This continued into my final year and subsequent Masters degree, and really kickstarted my love of teaching.
My journey into the world of language teaching started in 2014, when I completed my Cambridge CELTA teacher training. After passing top of my class I began working as a freelance teacher, teaching general, business, and exam prep English to students of all ages and language levels. I also began working in a Hungarian private elementary school, which provided me with excellent experience teaching young learners. In the summer of 2016 I accepted my first formal subject teaching position where I taught my degree field - International Relations - to young learners hoping to study the subject at university. Due to my outstanding performance I was invited to rewrite the entire course for the following academic year, and was promoted to the role of Student Director for the summer of 2017, continuing in 2018. Since then I have been working for a niche online education startup as an online education consultant, alongside working with a small group of students who I teach via Verbling.
I believe teaching to be a profession that takes a large amount of preparation, hard work, and skill in order to deliver great lessons. I take my professional development within teaching very seriously, and I am constantly on the lookout for new ideas and resources that will expand my arsenal of teaching methods. Shortly after completing my CELTA, I became fascinated with the science behind language learning, and the linguistic theories behind the development of languages. I believe that the key to learning anything - but especially languages - is consistency. Thats why I offer all of my students not just lessons, but a personalised learning program tailored to their lifestyle and timetable.
My teaching style is mainly about having fun, and I plan my lessons to be exciting, engaging, and effective. From my own experience as a student, learning is much harder if you are not enjoying the lessons or finding them interesting. The second focus of my teaching style is achieving measurable results. Learning any language is definitely a lifelong pursuit, but it saddens me when I see students that have been learning English for 5 years, and have shown very little sign of improvement. The methods I employ seek to break these learning plateaus, elevating students understanding and practical usage of English to new levels.
I was introduced to the idea of teaching via video chat during my time working at International House Budapest. It wasn't long before I was teaching nearly half of my students this way, and was even invited by the school to give a professional development seminar on the advantages of teaching via video. I have now been teaching online part-time with Verbling for over two years. I am always excited about meeting new students and contributing towards the success of this fantastic global community!
