Learning in School versus Language Immersion
6 anos atrás I studied French for five years throughout high school and university. Almost another five years later, if you speak to me now in French, maybe I can understand some of what you tell me. However, if you ask me to respond to you in French, it's almost impossible!
Two years ago, I arrived to Spain after taking 4 months of Spanish classes online. Fast forward two years, and I now have a high conversational level in Spanish. How is it that I studied French in school for five years and can't speak the language for more than 2 minutes, but I never officially studied Spanish and it's become my second language?!
I think people on this website realize that just learning the grammar rules, the reading and the writing in school can help, but sometimes isn't enough. Sometimes to really learn a language, you have to immerse yourself in it. I know when I became seriously interested in learning Spanish, I began to watch shows and films, listen to music and read in Spanish.
Do you think it's important to immerse yourself in a new language? How do you immerse yourself in English?
