It’s impossible to know everything, but it’s important to know what you need. Russian verb “знать”

When you learn a foreign language, it’s of big importance to get familiar with verbs and be able to operate them well. Today let’s just dwell on the Russian verb “знать” - “know”, which we use a lot in our every day life.

Let’s conjugate it, first of all:

Present Tense

я зна́ю I know
ты зна́ешь you know
он/она/оно зна́ет he/she/it knows
мы зна́ем we know
вы зна́ете you know
они зна́ют they know

Future Tense

я буду знать I’ll know
ты будешь знать you’ll know
он/она/оно будет знать he/she/it’ll know
мы будем знать we’ll know

Past Tense

ты (она) зна́ла you knew
он знал he knew
она зна́ла she knew
оно зна́ло it knew
мы зна́ли we knew
вы зна́ли you knew
они зна́ли they knew

To use this verb in the conjunctive mood, you just need to use the past tense form together with the particle “бы”. For example, “знал бы”, “знала бы”,“знали бы”.

Знал бы, где упасть, так соломки бы подстелил.
Danger foreseen is half avoided.

The verb in the imperative mood, “знай” is addressed to one person, and “знайте” is addressed to two or more people.

Next, let’s just make some collocations with this word, which you can learn as a whole unit and use it easily in your every day life.

Therefore, it’s possible to enjoy life here and now.

And let me share some phases and idioms with this verb in Russian.
If you know something very well, by heart, you can say “Я знаю это назубок”.
If you act appropriately according to your position, you can say about yourself “Я знаю своё место”
“Знать цену” is to appreciate properly someone or something.

Hi everyone! Привет всем! Ciao a tutti! ¡Hola a todos! Welcome everyone to my page :-) I am a native Russian speaker living in the US and who has been learning foreign languages for years and would never stop doing so and who is also willing to help others to learn languages. I graduated from the Kazakh University of World Languages and International Relations in the beautiful Almaty, Kazakhstan. My major was translation studies, but I would say I am more a teacher than I am a translator. This is simply a passion to me. I speak Russian, English, Italian, and some Spanish. And my German is totally forgotten somewhere:-) as you might know this simple truth about languages "use it or lose it". :-) We are all different and we learn foreign languages our own way. Some would prefer listening, others reading, the thirds being actively involved in the speaking activities. And there's no wrong way as long as we practice the language we like. We could do this journey on our own or with the...
