Episode 1

//ENGLISH VERSION BELOW//

An unexpected victory

After France victory in the 2018 World Cup Final, I thought it would be a great idea to look back at France recent world cup performance. We are beginning today with one of the most brilliant ones: The 1998 victory

July 12th, 1998, France just won the World Cup after a thrilling 3-0 victory over four-time champion Brazil. Zinedine Zidane scored two goals in that final and revealed himself as the greatest player of the world. The whole country went on fire and started to celebrate its glorious victory. A French commentator even famously said in the madness of that evening “After that game, I think I can die peacefully”.

Nothing could have possibly tarnish the pure joy of that magical night. French were the kings of the world or at least of Football. If you had talk to any French during that crazy night, He would have told you that he supported this squad from the beginning and was confident in their chance of winning. Well, he was lying!

To understand this shift we must come back one month earlier at the beginning of the tournament. France is qualified for the 1998 World Cup as host of the competition. The French squad failed to qualify to the two previous World Cup and their last games before the tournament were not really reassuring (lost against Morocco, win only 1-0 against Finland).

The team was under fire from both the press and the public opinion. French coach Aime Jacquet was particularly criticized for being too defensive and not having a clear tactical strategy. “L’Equipe” (the most famous sport newpapper in France) even depicted him as a “primitive coach”.

The players were said to be overrated, arrogant and weak. A lot of French thought they would be out quickly and were saying they did not even care about the World Cup. There was a disenchantment between the team and the country.

But at that moment magic happened. France won its three games of the first round against South Africa (3-0) Saudi Arabia (4-0) and Denmark (2-1). “Les Bleus” (surname of the French Squad) had the best attack of the tournament after the group stage. Suddenly French people started to be appeal by their team and realize that this squad might win it or at least can remain unbeaten for a long time.

But as in every great stories, things can not be that easy. In the round of 16 France faced Paraguay in Lens in a warm (40°C) Saturday afternoon. This game was said to be easy for the French. But after 90 minute the score was 0-0. Tension went steadily up as the penalty shootout loomed. But coming out of nowhere Laurent Blanc, the Centre Back scored a golden goal at the 114 minute and sent France to the quarter finals.

But troubles were far from being over. In fact, they were going to face a giant in the next round. Their opponent was three-time winner and 1994 World Cup finalist. It was Roberto Baggio’s Italy. A lot of French players like Didier Deschamps and Zinedine Zidane (Juventus), Marcel Desailly (Milan AC) or Lillian Thuram (Parma) were playing in Italy. If they had lost against that team, they would have mock by their Italian teammates for years. Defeat was not option for them. Unfortunately, as it was often the case with Italy, we saw a closed game and after 120 minutes neither side had scored. So, we were heading for a penalty shootout. In a thriller shootout the French Squad went through and qualified for its third World Cup semi-final.

This semi final was set to be a rematch of the 1982 semifinal between France and Germany. But everyone forgot Davor Suker’s Croatia. It was the country’s first World Cup since its independence from Yugoslavia. In Lyon, the Croatians defeated Germany by a clear margin (3-0) an advanced to the next round to face France.

In this semifinal Croatia played a beautiful game technically and mentally. They were the outsider. They had nothing to lose.

On the other side, France had the obligation to win against this supposed weak opponent. They was simply too much pressure on the French player. Just after halftime a long ball found Davor Suker. He beat France’s Centre Backs Laurent Blanc and Marcel Desailly, put the ball pass goalkeeper Fabien Barthez and score in a speechless stadium. The Croatians were simply better and deserved that goal.

It was a rude awakening for France but an awakening nonetheless. France became far more dangerous and scored twice with the same player in 10 minutes. The hero’s name was not Zidane nor Henry. It was right full back Lillian Thuram. He has been mocked throughout the years for his poor technic but scored two unexpected goals which put France ahead. Oddly enough, during his 141 international games Thuram only scored two goals. He made them count because those two unexpected goals allowed France to advance to its first ever World Cup Final.

And then come the final. In a marvelous game which seen Zidane scored two headers and Emmanuel Petit closed the game at the 89 minute, France became World Champion for the first time ever erasing 70 years of loosing culture. It was more than a football game. For a brief period of time, the French were all united behind their football team. It was the triumph of the “Black, Blanc, Beurs (Black, White and Arabs). Those World Champions were a symbol of the success of multiculturism as nearly half of them were born from immigrant parents.

This particular tournament turn things over and suddenly the players had become glorious knights who fought bravely for their country and make French proud.

This 1998 World Cup illustrates perfectly the ambivalent relationship between French and their team. In one second, Didier Deschamps and his teammates went from Zeroes to Heroes and half gods.

Twenty years later, people still talk about that glorious night. French Tv Channels often broadcast documentaries about this odyssey. The Champions can basically do everything they want, and the French people will still see them as half gods. For example, when Zidane went crazy and punched Materazzi with his head in the 2006 World Cup final, French people were not mad at him. In a poll conducted three days after the defeat nearly 60% of French stated they understand Zidane’s action.

During the whole tournament in Russia, the 2018 French squad has been compared to the glorious 1998 one. It has been a heavy legacy to handle for the French players in the last two decades. They were always in the shadow of the 1998 one. If an offensive midfielder performed well in two games, he was set to be the new Zidane. But the 2018 squad tried to escape that past. Contrarily to the previous world cups there is no clear leader. The squad is not a one-man team and frankly it’s a good thing. This is what allowed France to win the 2018 World Cup in Russia

This story ends well but there are other which went sideways. To be continued !

Bonjour à tous ! My name is Jocelyn. I am 21 years old French native speaker born in Nantes (France). I am currently studying in a business school (EM Lyon) I love travelling, meeting new people and experiencing new culture. I am also a big sport fan. For the past two years I have been a tutor for French high school students in French, English and Spanish. They all had different levels from the one who once said to me “The time is beautiful” while speaking about the weather (Time and weather are spelled the same in French hence the confusion) to the ones who were practically fluent. Adapting to every students needs and level is what drives me. Seeing them progressing, meeting their goals, pass the exams for the school they were dreaming for is just wonderful. Plus, during the classes I get to know a person. I teach her somethings but I’m also learning from her. It is definitely what I love about this job. I believe that learning a new language is about fun and interaction rat...
