I am an ESL teacher from the U.S. with years of experience and a passion for teaching. I graduated from the University of Southern Indiana with a degree in theatre. I also have a TEFL certificate from i-to-i.
My lessons are mostly based on conversation. I am very good at asking questions and getting students to stretch their abilities. Conversation topics would be selected according to the student's interests and needs. My approach is immersive; I do not speak the student’s native language.
As for reading and writing, I am happy to start written communication over Verbling. Reading out loud is so helpful to learning new words, practicing pronunciation, and finding unfamiliar expressions. I choose articles based on what interests my student. If you take lessons with me, I will encourage you to look at Newsela. They publish articles at many different reading levels, and an account is free.
I have taught adult students from all over the world at a literacy center in the U.S. I also taught at an after-school program for all ages in Quillabamba, Peru. Right now, I am on my second year at an NGO school in Somalia; I teach Social Studies and English. When I first got here, my students knew very little conversational English. Now, I am proud to say, communication with them is easy. I want to have similar experiences with as many people as possible.
I look forward to hearing from you!
