Hello, I'm Michael. I'm from the United States. I've been an English teacher for over eight years now. I began my ESL teaching career in South Korea, where I spent 3.5 years at an elementary school outside of Seoul. I've now been in the United Arab Emirates for five years, where I've been teaching adults for various purposes (academic, professional, and social). I earned my TEFL certificate in 2011 and I have continued to build experience ever since. I am also a certified Cambridge speaking examiner for both Key and Preliminary English Tests (KET and PET).
Since coming to Dubai in 2014, I have taught employees at many different corporations and organizations such as J.W. Marriott Hotels, Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, 3M, Sharpe, Starwood Hotels and Resorts, as well as cadets at the Dubai Police Academy. In addition to training employees in English communication, I often assist private students with IELTS preparation. I also conduct 4-skill courses in groups for those looking to improve their English skills for general purposes.
As a rule, I adjust each class to match the students needs, learning style, and personality. In other words, I tend to "go with the flow". While I always have a lesson plan prepared, I use it as more of a guide than a necessity. What works for one student (or group) may not work for another (and vice versa). As I work at a private language center, the classes are very student based, meaning the students can get what they want out of the class. The group classes I teach are generally meant to focus on grammar, but giving a lecture or drilling grammar can become really boring (for both student and teacher) I have a style which intertwines conversation, vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation. This is often done through games, riddles, trivia, quizzes, or simply open conversation.
I love teaching useful expressions, idioms, proverbs, and vocabulary, which will help the students in their everyday communication. You can also follow me on Instagram, @EnglishGuru_MichaelMaurer.
