عني

Hello Verbling Community, my name is Oluwaseun Joseph. I am a Nigerian and Yorùbá man. I am currently in the final year of my first degree at the University of Lagos, Akoka in Nigeria.

I have been tutoring an American in Yorùbá language, culture and history since May 2019 till now (Virtually. We have had some physical classes early in 2020 before the lockdown). I have also taught other Nigerians outside my ethnic group earlier this year.

I use Microsoft PowerPoint software to create presentations in conjunction with the classes. I also use audios through voice notes (on platforms like WhatsApp and Telegram) to aid pronounciation, and this includes folk songs that aid learning. My teaching style primarilly focuses on the student.

For my first student, the style has been in consideration of the American context for them, with the use of terms and grammar (as compared to British english) that help them pronounce the words better and relate to certain things specific to the Yorùbá language better. Same was for my Nigerian students, I employ things like Nigerian pidgin to aid understanding since it's common among folks in my country.

The four (4) proficiency areas for any language are; Speaking, Listening, Writing and Reading. With the use of; Microsoft PowerPoint slides for reading and pronounciation/music for listening, we will lead to the final two areas; Writing and Speaking respectively, through the use of feedbacks. The Verbling video system will make this very possible.

I believe that, learning the culture and history surrounding a certain language (especially a foreign one!) goes a long was in aiding the proficiency in it, hence the inclusion of Yorùbá culture and history in my teaching curriculum.

According to a 2018 revised paper titled "HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO LEARN A FOREIGN LANGUAGE?" published by the Cambridge University Press, there are mainly three things that influence the period of learning foreign languages; the Learning goal, the Learning environment and the Learner. I will use this method in approaching each learner to help them attain their desires in Yorùbá Language.

I look forward to working with Verbling to bring more foreign students to proficiency in Yorùbá language.
