Back into the Rhythm of Online Instruction

Hello, Verbling Community! It's such an opportunity to login once again and realize Verbling will have more users in online education because of the Corona virus pandemic. That's why I've lowered my tutoring rate. Now more than ever, connecting with people and empowering students to learn is essential to happiness and success.

In the past two months, I have, like many teachers, experienced a whirlwind of online instructional strategies. My sixth grade students needed online resources to develop their fluency, increase their vocabulary, and learn about literature and persuasive techniques. Reaching them through the phone, youtube, and Blackboard has allowed for asynchronous and real time education. That said, many students felt motivated when they had an opportunity to interact with a teacher because the interaction built their emotional attachment to the class.

While I have no statistic to extrapolate, my experience and intuition tell me that success with any skill depends upon a person's intrinsic motivation: how much the student wants to do the task for the sake of it, rather than because of a reward or a punishment. Learning English is no stranger to this fact because learners need to enjoy learning English to improve AND to accomplish a goal. Did you know students who are intrinsically motivated to read tend to invest three times as much than those who are not intrinsically motivated (Wigfried and Guthrie, 1997)?

About Me:
Since becoming a Verbling teacher, I've taught diverse students different areas of English development outside of the online platform. I've tutored an adult from Iraq who needed help in elementary reading, and I have tutored a high school student in SAT testing. Although I do not have a TOEFL teaching license, I recently finished a college course in Evidence-based literacy instruction, which means teaching students how to read. Most importantly, my professional experience teaching 6th grade English for five years can empower me to help students develop their English language skills. Please note: I teach on Verbling during the summer. This summer, I am available June 7- July 23. Hello English Learner! I am so happy to teach English to students who have different ages. I wrote "About Me" so many students can understand, and I can write very well. If you want extra help with advanced ("hard") English, please look at the last paragraph, "Advanced Student." If you want help learning about English, please see, "Beginning-Intermediate Student." Beginning-Intermediate Student I love to teach when the student and I can talk without noise, but I also teach in a classroom every day. I hope in the summer I can help students online; I do not teach English in a classroom in the summer, so I have time. I know English is hard; I helped an Arabic-speaking adult student develop her English, and I have helped a student who speaks Spanish. Also, I learned French in college, so I know a new language is hard, but English is really very hard! Advanced Student: ...
