Is it too early to start Christmas preparations!?

This year the Christmas decorations and gifts were in the shops at the beginning of October here in England!! Every year they begin earlier! 
What are your thoughts? Are you an 'early bird' and start your Christmas preparations around now? OR Do you think it is far too early? What's usual in your country?
