When you travel abroad do you try to learn a bit of the local language first?

Do you think it is really important to learn the language and the culture of a country before travelling abroad or are you the kind of traveller who relies on universal gestures or animated facial expressions when you have to ask a question or get a poin across?
Can you imagine what would happen if you couldn´tread the road signs?
