Como usar a palavra "chato (a)" em português?

O português é uma língua maravilhosa.

Escuto muitos estrangeiros dizendo que amam o português, como ele soa e que adoram a experiência de estudá-lo e práticá-lo. Mas, apesar de lindo, temos que admitir que pode ser "chatinho" de entender, às vezes, não é? E com chatinho, me refiro a um pouco difícil ou complicado. O português, como a maioria dos idiomas, tem palavras iguais com diferentes significados, melhor conhecidas como sinônimos. A própria palavra que acabei de usar – chatinho – é um ótimo exemplo.

Chato pode ter o significado de entediante (boring, em inglês), irritante (annoying) e exigente, difícil para escolher algo (picky; difficult; demanding). E esses são só alguns dos seus usos, – sim, existem outros! – mas, fique tranquilo, eu vou te ajudar!

Por exemplo:

Esse filme tá muito chato. = This movie is too boring.

Meu fim de semana foi meio chato. = My weekend was kind of boring.

Esses mosquitos são tão chatos! = These mosquitos are so annoying!

Ele era chato, e ela queria que ele a deixasse em paz. = He was annoying and she wanted him to leave her alone.

Meu filho é chato/chatinho para comer. = My son is a picky eater.

Eu não sou chata para comer. I'm not really a picky eater.

Brasileiros também tendem a dizer frases como:

Você é muito chata! = You're so difficult!

Deixa de ser tão chato! = Stop being so annoying!

E pode também ser uma maneira de expressar empatia ao ouvir alguma história negativa. Se seu amigo te conta uma má notícia e você fala "Poxa, que chato, hein" (Oh, that's too bad. / Oh, that sucks.)
