I don't know the right word! (student FAQs answered)

6年前
Hello everyone! 😄🌞

In this discussion post series I'm answering some of the questions I get asked by students most often.

Student Question
How do I find a word to say - without using a translator - when I don't know the exact word in English?

My Answer
Vocabulary is like money... we always want more. But when the well (or the wallet) runs dry, we need a backup. Here are 3 strategies to use when your vocabulary well runs dry.

Use a synonym (or an antonym) Synonyms are words that are similar in meaning, while antonyms are words that are opposite. Don't remember 'huge' or 'large'? Say 'big' or 'very big'.
Use a more general word Can't pull out the word 'professor'? Use 'teacher'.
Say "it's kind of like" or "it's sort of like" Don't remember 'peach'? Say "it's kind of like an apple, but yellow or orange, and softer".

What strategies do you use when you don't know a word? I'd love to hear them in the comments! 😄🌞❤
