Korean people think eating rice importantly,
we believe we didn't have a meal if we didn't eat rice.
And the more interesting thing about Korea's obsession with rice is that
it also impacted our daily conversation and language.
for 먹다 = to eat
there are also many expressions/different meanings behind it!
for example,
밥을 먹다 = to eat rice
약을 먹다 = to take medicine
물을 먹다 = to drink/absorb water (You can also use 마시다, which is to drink.)
마음을 먹다 = be determined, make one's mind
나이를 먹다 = get older
겁을 먹다 = be scared
욕을 먹다 = get criticized/blamed/swore at/scolded with vulgarities
1등을 먹다, 금메달을 먹다 = ger scored/ ranked/ger medal or prize
한방 먹다 = get punched
...and more!
When Koreans are angry, you might hear them say;
너 오늘 국물도 없을 줄 알아! (informal)
You won't even get any soup for today!
When they try to be friendly and wants to keep in contact with you;
조만간 식하 한번 같이 하시죠.(formal) or 조만간 밥 한번 먹자 (informal)
Let's have a meal together soon
When they Greet You;
식사는 하셨어요? (formal) or 밥 먹었어?(informal)
Have you eaten yet?
When they want to ask you, 'how's it going/ How have you've been.'
밥은 먹고 다니냐?(informal)
Have you been eating well?
When they find someone annoys them;
쟤 진짜 밥맛이다./ 쟤 진짜 밥맛없다.(informal)
she/he makes me lost all of my appetites.
And when someone has done or try to do something wrong/illegal;
너 그러다 콩밥 먹는다? / 콩밥 먹게 해줘?/ 콩밥 한번 먹어볼래?
You gon eat red bean rice! / do you want to eat red bean rice?
=you will go to Jail! / do you want to go to Jail?
(since in Korea's Jail, people think they only give you red bean rice, which is everyone's least favorite.
