🏛️ Why you should stop learning words and start learning "CHUNKS"
2 дня назадBy Raquel | Ex-RAE Researcher & Polyglot
If you've ever felt like you have a "robot voice" when speaking Spanish, even if you know a lot of grammar, this is for you.
Many students spend years memorizing lists of isolated words. But here’s the secret from a linguistic perspective: Our brains don't process language word by word.
We process it in "Chunks" (Lexical Units).
What is a "Chunk"? 🧩
A chunk is a group of words that always go together naturally.
Instead of learning “baja” (leave/drop), learn “pedir una baja médica” (to request medical leave).
Instead of learning “permiso” (permission), learn “conceder un permiso de lactancia”.
Three Major Benefits of this Method:
1. Fluency without "Buffering" 🚀
When you learn chunks, your brain retrieves a pre-assembled block of language. You don't have to think: "Which preposition goes here?" or "Is it 'dar' or 'hacer'?" The block is already complete.
2. You sound like a Native, not a Translator 🏛️
At the RAE (Royal Spanish Academy), we study how words "collocate". Some combinations are grammatically correct but sound "weird" to a native. Learning chunks ensures you use the combinations we actually use in real life.
3. Reduced Cognitive Load 🧠
Speaking a second language is exhausting. By using chunks, you free up "RAM" in your brain to focus on what you want to say, rather than how to build the sentence from scratch.
My Advice for Today:
Next time you read an article or watch a video, don't write down single words. Write down the 3 or 4 words surrounding that word. That is your chunk.
What is the most useful Spanish 'chunk' you've learned recently? Write it in the comments and I'll tell you if it sounds natural! 👇
