10 Tips to Learn Russian Everyday!

How do you learn Russian words and vocabulary?

Traditionally, you might look up new words, then write them in a notebook with their translation in your native language. But how can you be sure that you will remember those words tomorrow?

Here are 10 useful tips for you to use to extend your vocabulary in Russian, or any other language!

  1. Take post-it notes and label all your things at home in Russian

This might seem silly to you, you already know all the words for your household items right? Besides when will you actually talk about them? You would be surprised how many everyday objects come up in conversation, if you're shopping for furniture or just talking about your day. You might even be surprised by how many new words you learn this way, such as:
  • тумбочка, "bedside-table"
  • кофеварка, "coffemaker"
  • розетка, "wall outlet"
  • лейка для душа, "shower head"
  • салфетка, "napkin"

  1. Listen to Russian songs

Don't worry, you probably won't understand all of the words at the beginning. But, you can look up any lyrics online and research unknown words and phrases to help you understand. This is also a great to hone your context understanding, so that you can understand what the conversation (or song) is about without actually understanding each and every word you are hearing.

  1. Find a forum in Russian about your favorite hobby or interest

Learning a new language is always easier, and more fun, when you get to learn words and vocabulary about something you are interested in! Reading a forum discussion is a great way to find new vocabulary, and, if you feel comfortable, you can even participate in the discussion.

  1. Keep a diary.

Try to write about your day using Russian in a private diary. It doesn't really matter what events you write about from your day, because even in your daily routine you will begin to notice new words, vocabulary, or phrases you hadn't thought to learn before. It is also a great way to practice for a normal, everyday conversation you might have with a friend or family.

  1. Read classic and popular literature

Even if you only read half a page per day, you will begin to understand more vocabulary and learn to understand based on context rather than focusing on individual words in the text. You might even notice the longer you read, the faster you may begin to understand the phrasing, context, and vocabulary.

  1. Write you shopping list in Russian

Even if your shopping list is always the same, this will help you practice and use your existing vocabulary on a regular basis. It might even inspire you to....

  1. Try Russian Cooking Recipes

Food is such a huge part of any culture, and so much fun to talk about and (hopefully) delicious to eat! Especially, if you enjoy preparing food it should be a very interesting and exciting process to learn new words while you learn to cook a new dish.

  1. Change your language settings to Russian

Force yourself to learn new words and use them everyday by changing your language settings everywhere possible. Even change your mobile phone, computer, or tablet, and don't forget to change your Verbling language settings too!

  1. Read Russian news and newspapers

Start slowly by reading just a few sentences at a time, while paying attention to any unknown words or phrases you don't understand. Day by day increase the number of sentences your read, and you will be pleasantly surprised by the results.

  1. Communicate with native speakers!

Really, it’s the best way to learn Russian. A native speaker will help you learn phrasing, pronunciation, and slang that you wouldn't be able to learn from any textbook.
