IELTS READING QUESTION STRATEGY-COMPLETION TASKS

The types of COMPLETION TASKS you may find in the IELTS Reading exam are as follows:
NOTE COMPLETION
FLOWCHART COMPLETION
SENTENCE COMPLETION
TABLE COMPLETION
SUMMARY COMPLETION

STRATEGY FOR SUCCESS

1. Read the instructions carefully and see the words limit that you need to write in order to fill in the gaps. Usually the word limit is ONE WORD, TWO WORDS, THREE WORDS

2. With completion tasks the questions and gaps will not always follow the order of the information in the text.

3. Be sure to copy the words from the text in exactly the same order to fill in the gaps. They must fit grammatically and the correct word order must be used.

4. PREDICTION-try to PREDICT what kind of words are missing eg is the word a NOUN, a VERB, an ADJECTIVE or an ADVERB? Look carefully at the words before and after the gap to help determine what kind of word needs to be filled in.

5. UNDERLINE KEYWORDS that precede gaps. Think carefully about the meaning of these words and try to think of synonyms. SCAN the text for the location of the keywords to find the correct answer. DON´T FORGET that IELTS tests your ability to PARAPHRASE. Synonyms of gap fill keywords may appear in the text.

Hello, my name is Sonja and I am originally from South Africa but I live in Portugal now. I speak fluent Portuguese. I specialize in helping you take your English skills to the next level with dynamic, personalised English coaching with proven results. I am a Certified IELTS exam Coach for IELTS Reading, Speaking, Listening + IELTS Writing coaching. I have 16 + years of formal ESL classroom experience and I have taught around 1000 online English Proficiency lessons to students from around the world over the past 18 months. I hold a 300 Hour TEFL Diploma and I am a native English speaker with slight, South African accent. I left my corporate job in investment banking to become a teacher and I am so glad I did. I find teaching to be a truly rewarding occupation and it really does not feel like a job to me at all. I have taught focused Business English classes based on student needs analysis to students working for multinationals in those countries in areas such as banking, supply chain management, the oil industry and IT. Typical lessons have covered areas of Business English such as meeting agendas, how to deliver presentations effectively, correct vocabulary and terminology to use when describing charts and graphs, banking, business cycles, business email writing, making small talk, soft skills, customer service and problem solving, responding to serious customer service complaints etc. I also taught a couple of advertising executives in Sao Paul who needed help with industry specific vocabulary and articles. I have taught adults and children of all levels and have helped prepare many students for IELTS. I love how teaching inspires one to keep learning and improve!
