The Prepositions "At, In, On" To Talk About Time

Hello Verbling community!

Today, I will talk about using the prepositions “at, in, on” to talk about time. Prepositions can be some of the most confusing parts of the English language. Often, you need to learn their use from a native speaker, and then practice them in daily speech to gain proficiency.

1. We use “at” to talk about clock time. “At noon” means at 12:00PM and “at midnight” means at 12:00AM.

ex. I woke up at 7:00 and fed my dog.
ex. I usually go to sleep at midnight.

2. We use “on” to talk about days and dates.

ex. I go to school on Mondays.
ex. My birthday is on July 7th.

3. We use “in” for months.

ex. Kate’s birthday is in August.

4. We use “in” for large scales of time.

ex. Allie came to the USA in 2014. *used for years
ex. Rock music was popular in the 1960s. *used for decades
ex. Computers were invented in the 20th century. *used for centuries

5. We use in the morning, in the afternoon, and in the evening. However, we say “at night.”

ex. I eat breakfast in the morning.
ex. I have dinner with my wife at night.

That’s it for today! Practice these prepositions daily in order to get comfortable with them. Thanks for reading!
