The struggle of learning Spanish: Where do I start?

Learning Spanish has sort of become a must in the United States.

Spanish is the second most spoken language in the country, and American life is heavily influenced by Latino culture. We love tacos, enjoy Mexican Coca-Cola, celebrate "El dia de los muertos", dream about vacationing in Costa Rica, yet still struggle to exchange few words with native speakers when ordering tamales at the food truck.

So, why not get your gear on and start learning Spanish this year?

There are so many words you already know: hospital, animal, casual, tropical...

Not to mention, so many others you can certainly figure out: exacto, correcto, producto, organico, romantico...

Learning Spanish will not only make you bilingual but will help you break stereotypes, bringing you closer to understanding a whole world of Latino-American and Spanish language and cultures, plus their easy-going lifestyle. I do warn you though, once you get started it will be hard to stop: learning such a fun and useful language can be addicting!

OK, now you are probably asking yourself: "Where do I start?" That's the easy part!

1. Start searching for Verbling tutors that teach Spanish and appeal to you. Pick one.

2. Leave your shame behind (no baggage allowed for this journey!)

3. Schedule a trial lesson with your new teacher, and message them to let them know what you hope to learn.

4. Be ready for your lesson: big smile and "ganas" for learning.

5. Meet your teacher, enjoy the lesson, and discuss and set realistic goals that your teacher can help you reach!

6. Be consistent: learning languages require daily practice and you know it! Do not lie to yourself.

7. Keep it real: visit Latino neighborhoods, try to practice, listen to salsa, or watch Netflix in Spanish.

8. Thank yourself for taking the big step in committing yourself to learning the language.

9. Enjoy the journey and learn things that interest you!

10. Do not stop: keep practicing, keep learning, keep being curious and do not forget to invite others to join you.

Learning a new language is fun and it is never too late to start!

¡Hola! ¡Hablemos español o inglés! My name is Beatriz and I am from the south of Spain. I am a certified teacher of languages and I hold a Bachelors in ESL and a Masters Degree in teaching Spanish as a foreign language. The last 12 years I lived in the USA where I worked as a teacher of Spanish in the public and private systems at the elementary and secondary levels. I have also taught adults here on Verbling. I have also worked teaching Spanish and English as foreign languages in Germany, England, and Spain. Teaching languages is my passion and I transmit that to my students in every lesson! When teaching I love to get to know my students: their interests and goals, their previous knowledge in the subject of matter, their level, and their best way of learning. Putting these pieces of information together I plan specific and personal lesson plans adapted to the needs of my students to help them succeed and learn at their own pace. Whether your interest in learning Spanish or ...
