3 Modes Of Thinking

Convergent

Convergent thinking is the ability to answer a question based on facts, standards, or probabilities. It’s like answering a multiple-choice question where you can just select the correct answer without having to think of ideas. It’s also called linear or vertical thinking.
Convergent thinking is useful in students especially if they’re answering questions based on a theory, and in solving problems that don't require you to use your imagination.

Divergent

Divergent thinking is the ability to use your own ideas to come up with possible solutions. It is usually spontaneous and free-flowing so it can be used in a short span of time. It is also called non-linear or horizontal thinking.
Divergent thinking can be used in situations wherein you’ll need to decide on something based on subjective opinions.

Lateral

Lateral thinking requires both direct answers and creative ideas. The difference between critical and lateral thinking is that critical thinking is all about seeking errors and finding the truth. In contrast, lateral thinking uses a known idea to create a new idea. It is also called thinking outside the box.
Lateral thinking is discarding the patterns and preconceived notions of the traditional way of thinking.
