Both 几 and 多少 are questions words to ask a quantity.
- 几 is generally used to ask a smaller number:
zhuō shàng yóu jǐ gè píngguǒ wǔ gè
桌上有几个苹果？ 五个。
How many apples are there on the table?
nǐ érzi jǐ suì le qī suì
你儿子几岁了？ 七岁。
How old is your son?
- And 多少 can be used to ask a big number:
zhèi zhāng zhuōzi duōshǎo qián wú bǎi èrshí kuài
这张桌子多少钱？ 520块。
How much is this desk?
zhāng lǎoshī yǒu duōshǎo gè xuéshēng wǔshí gè
张老师有多少个学生？ 五十个。
How many students does teacher Zhang have?
