Crime and punishment vocabulary and meanings for upper-int. students

Noun and verb appeal An appeal is a formal request to people in authority (for example, the police or the government) to consider their decision again and change it, especially when it is about a legal decision in a court of law.

Noun and verb fine A fine is the money you pay as a punishment when you commit a small crime.

Noun rehabilitation The process of becoming a better person, becoming a normal citizen. How? Through education, work etc.

Verb convict If someone is convicted of a crime, it is officially decided in a court that they are guilty of committing the crime.

Verb release If a prisoner is released from prison, he or she is allowed to leave because they have finished their punishment.

Noun cell A cell is a room in a prison where prisoners are kept locked in.

Noun offence If someone commits an offence, they do something that is against the law.
Verb serve To spend a period of time in prison. For example, if you serve a month in prison, it means you are in prison for one month.
