Cześć! Christmas Time is upon us!

This week I have another news for you from the Polski Daily website!

When the night comes and the first star comes up on the night sky, it’s time to start dinner. Everyone share’s some opłatek – communion wafer and they greet each other with Christmas wishes. Under the table cloth there is some hay hidden – as a symbol of the hay from where Jesus was born. First we eat the soup. In different regions there is a different one, but most of the country eats barszcz (beetroot soup) and / or forest mashroom soup. Then, for the second course we have fish – usually carp. We eat it with some pierogi with the sauerkraut and forest mashrooms filling, we also have herring, sweet pierogi with poppy seed filling, home made kompot (stewed fruit) made from dried fruits and many others… For dessert we have coffee and cake – cheesecake, poppy seed cake and some gingerbread cookies. That’s also when we sing Christmas carols! Christmas Eve is the day of fasting, which means we eat pescaterian – without meat but with fish!

According to the tradition, there should be 12 dishes on the Christmas table – as there were 12 Apostoles. Everyone waits for that moment after the dinner. This is when we open the presents! And afterwards, we all sit together and watch Home Alone and laugh till we cry from the same jokes and scenes we already know so well :D Some people go for Pasterka – the midnight mass. I usually fall asleep early so I never go! ;)

Cheers!
