Improving your English pronunciation PLOSIVES
4 years agoEnglish Phonetics is a challenge to teach and the best way is to make students imitate the sounds when they hear the teacher say the words. But sometimes teaching the theory and what organs are involved helps a lot.
Today I will concentrate in the plosives. In Phonetics we talk about sounds not letters. There are symbols for each sound
Plosive consonants in English are B, P, D, T, K, G
/b/ /p/ /d/ /t/ /k/ /g/
The name PLOSIVE is related to an explosion, because to produce these sounds the air is stopped and then suddenly released.
In Spanish however, the same letters are pronounced in a completely different way. That is why when English speaking learners want to say words in Spanish starting with those letters they pronounce them too strongly.
For example they say Te Gusta Buenos Aires?
On the other hand, when students are learning English they tend to pronounce these letters not strongly enough and sometimes this leads to misunderstanding For example "teacher" "possible" "get" "Take"
