Intonation and meaning

The meaning of a particular sentence will change when intonation changes. As an illustration, see how the meaning of the a sentence changes depending on what word we stress:

1. I didn't say he stole the money. (Someone else said it, not me).
2. I didn't say he stole the money. (That is not true at all).
3. I didn't say he stole the money. (Not in so many words, but I may have suggested it).
4. I didn't say he stole the money. (Someone else might have taken it).
5. I didn't say he stole the money. (Maybe he just borrowed it, I don't know why he took it).
6. I didn't say he stole the money. (He may have taken something else).

Say these sentences out loud and feel the difference.
