Hi Verbling!

Have you ever heard someone use these expressions?:
  1. I'll keep you in the loop.
  2. I'll give you a heads up.

Both of these expressions have similar meanings... to keep someone in the loop means to keep them informed about something they are already aware of. On the other hand, giving someone a heads up means telling them / forewarning them about something that is yet to occur.

For example, you could say:
  1. I'd love it if you would come to my party, I'm still making the arrangements but I'll keep you in the loop.
  2. Hi! Just to give you a heads up, the party has been moved from Friday night to Saturday night.
Last question:
Are they formal or informal?

You would be right if you decided that these were both for use in informal/colloquial scenarios.
