Languages,books,authors and culture!

I would like to know if there is any author or book who helped you to learn a foreign language and also helped you to get to know the culture of a country.
To give you an example, I really love Isabel Allende because by reading her books, I learned a lot about the story of south America and I also became passionate about it.I read her books in italian and spanish and I'm reading the last one she published in portuguese.
Talking about portuguese, I enjoyed reading the poems of Fernando Pessoa and Florbela Espanca.
For portuguese I can also mention a few fado singers like Camanè.
For english I was impressed by the poems of William Wordsworth and Jane Austen who describes very well the society of her time.
