Longping Yuan-Father of Hybrid Rice 袁隆平-杂交水稻之父

 Yuan Longping passed away on May 22, 2021, at the age of 91. People all over China mourned him in their own way.
Brief introduction of Longping Yuan
When he was young, he saw lots of Chinese people starving. He has tried hard to make sure everyone has enough to eat. To get closer to this goal, he grew hybrid rice.
Hybrid rice is very important for China. About one-fifth of the world’s people live in China. But China only has less than 9 percent of the world’s land. So the rice grown in China has to have a big yield. It has to have more grains in each plant. Its grains have to be bigger. It has to be strong so we can grow it in deserts, mountains, and snowy villages.
Hybrid rice can take in water and nutrition from the ground better than other rice. It can take in sunlight better as well. All of these things help it grow bigger and taller. Its annual yield is about 20 percent higher than that of other rice.
“I had a dream. In my dream, rice plants grow as tall as sorghum, each ear of rice is as big as a broom, and each grain of rice is as huge as a peanut,” Yuan once said.
